Nato nel 1946 a Los Angeles, produttore di Spielberg, dopo aver partecipato alle seconde unità di Indiana Jones, esordisce come regista nel 1990 con Arachnophobia. Nel 1993 gira Alive - I sopravvissuti e nel 1995 Congo. Le sue storie, tutte tra sopravvivenza e animali: ragni, scimmioni, dinosauri (Jurassic Park) e cavalli (Seabiscuit), indicano bene gli interessi di questo autore-produttore.
