È stato produttore esecutivo di Training Day e ha diretto il film Gossip, per Warner Bros. I suoi crediti come regista televisivo includono puntate pilota che sono divenute serie per la CBS e la TNT e programmi noti come NYPD Blue, ER, e Party of Five. È stato produttore e regista della serie della HBO vincitrice di un Emmy Award Deadwood. Tra i suoi documentari The First Year, Teach, Norton Simon: A Man and His Art, JFK and the Imprisoned Child. Lavora con l'indipendente Outlaw Productions, a stretto contatto con filmmakers, compreso il regista Steven Soderbergh per il pionieristico film del 1989 Sex Lies and Videotape, e co-producendo altri film con la Outlaw.
