He grew up in the Arctic tundra, where he lived as a nomad until age 9 years. Sculptor turned film director, he founded Igloolik Isuma Productions, Inc., the first Inuit Canadian production company through which he produced films for a community that had no TV. His film credits include the shorts Qaggiq (1989), Nunaqpa (1991), Saputi (1993) and Nunavut (1995), two documentaries Nipi (1999) and Nanugiurutiga (2001). Atanarjuat is his first fiction feature followed by The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006). His works have been screened in over 60 countries, including a one-man show at the MOMA, New York, and the National Gallery of Canada.
