biography
He was born on September 10th 1914. He starts apprenticing for RKO when he is nineteen, until a sound effect supervisor recognizes his talent and helps his advance in the film industry. After working some time on soundtracks, he gets his first job as a film editor with Winterset (1936) and in 1941 Orson Welles congratulates him on the excellent job done for the mythical Citizen Kane. His career as a film director starts with B-movies, until he directs some masterpieces such as Helen of Troy (1955), West Side Story (1961), The Sound of Music (1965) and Startrek (1979).
