Strongly influenced by sci-fi letterature, he starts as an amatorial film maker and lands the movie industry with taking care of Love Story's promotion campaign. Alternating screenplay writing and direction, he reached fame with Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan. One of his notable works is the screenplay of The Human Machine.
