He was born in the United Kingdom in 1943. After making some short films, among which Ready When You Are Mr. Mc Gill (1976), in 1977 he directed his first feature, The Man in the Iron Mask, which was followed by The Awakening (1980), Bad Blood (1981), Blood Feud (1983). His first real success was Dance with a Stranger (1985). After some features considered as minors such as Amazing Grace and Chuck (1987), The Good Father (1987), Soursweet (1990) and Enchanted April (1991), he became very successful in 1992 with Four Weddings and a Funeral, followed by An Awfully Big Adventure (1995), Donnie Brasco (1997) and Pushing Tin (1999).
