Williamson

biography

(1881-1966) British photographer, naturalized US citizen in 1901, he is noted for his pioneer work in underwater photography in the Bahamas. He refined the work of his father, Charles Williamson of Virginia, who invented a deep-sea tube connected to a photosphere for use in salvage operations. John and his brother George saw that the device could be used for underwater photography and designed the Williamson photosphere. The brothers created the Submarine Film Corporation through which they produced Thirty Leagues Under the Sea (1914), in which J. Ernest fights a shark.
