biography

He was born in Sendai, Japan, in 1958. In 1984 he began working at Dentsu Film, where he made TV commercials and promotional videos. In 1988 he decided to make a documentary about the children of Manila, which he began shooting the following year with his film on the lives of youngsters who live near the Smoky Mountain dump just north of Manila. Shooting lasted until 1991. He made more trips to the Philippines and in 1994 completed filming for Chimney Sweeps, a long documentary shot in Tagalog. In 2000 he joined the residents of the Payatas dump, and completed Kami no ko tachi in 2001.
