biography
He was born in Glebe (Sydney) in 1890. He was the photographer of the expeditions of D. Mawson and E. H. Shackleton to Antarctica, and F. Birtles to northern Australia. During the war he enlisted and was sent to France as an official photographer with the rank of captain. In 1917 he was transferred to the Middle East, where he devoted himself to aerial photography and filmed bomber raids in Palestine. In 1922-23 he made a film on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, often using underwater photography. Later he devoted himself to a series of films on New Guinea. In ‘29 he took part as an official photographer in the British Australian New Zealand Expedition, again with Mawson. Later he shot documentaries for Cinesound and the Australian government. In ‘39 he was again an official war photographer. He was one of the official photographers at the Tehran conference, where he filmed Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. At the end of the war he returned to Australia and made a series of films of Australia's industrial expansion.
