He was born in Ferrara in 1926. He begins his career in 1949, as a documentary maker. In ten years he shoots about forty short films dealing mainly with social issues and including: Delta Padano, La città di Messer Ludovico, Uomini di palude, Portatrici di pietre, Tre canne e un soldo, Teatro minimo, Gli ultimi cantastorie, Uomini soli. Among his full length films: La lunga notte del '43 (1960), La banda Casaroli (1962), Le stagioni del nostro amore (1966), Violenza: quinto potere (1971), Bronte, cronaca di un assassinio che i libri di storia non hanno raccontato (1972), Il delitto Matteotti (1973), Amore amaro (1974), Un dramma borghese (1979). He also directed some films for television: La piovra 2 (1986), Medici senza frontiere (1987), Il giudice istruttore (1990), Piazza di Spagna (1991), Ferrara (1995).
