biography
After studying in Cambridge, he arrives in Hollywood in the late Thirties and starts working as a film editor. In 1945 he makes two shorts. The following year marks his debut with The Verdict. He works on different types of productions (majors, TV, independent cinema) and on different genres from science fiction (Invasion of Body Snatchers) to western (The Shootist), but he is mostly remembered as the author of detective and action movies such as the classic Dirty Harry (1971) and Play Misty for Me (1971), starring his friend Clint Eastwood who will dedicate him one of his most important films: The Unforgiven.
