biography

She was born in Brussels, in 1950; she began making documentaries and fiction films in 1968. Known for her experimental bent, she has also designed sets and scenery for theater. In Je tu il elle (1974) and especially in Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), she conducted lengthy and ruthless analyses of her female protagonists, which won her critical and audience acclaim. Among her best known works: Un divan à New York (1996), South (1999) and the recent The Captive (2000), based on a novel by Marcel Proust.
