He was a photographer and director of photography; born in Portugal, he emigrated to Brazil, and settled in Manaus. In 1912 he published over 200 photographs of the Putumayo River in the Álbum de Fotografías: Viaje de la Comisión Consular al Río Putumayo y Afluentes. Around 1918 he joined Amazônia Cine Film. His research and direction of filming the Basin went into the making of No País das Amazonas (1922) He documented an expedition by Theodor Koch-Grunberg and Alexander H. Rice Jr. in the film entitled No Rastro do Eldorado. During the rest of his life, he collaborated with Brazilian film producer Joaquim Gonçalves de Araújo. Through de Araújo’s company he made his final feature Santa Maria da Villa Amazzonia (1957).
